Computer locks up or is slow:

click Start > Run > type "msconfig" > click the Startup tab > remove unnecessary programs (see table for suggested things to uncheck and to leave checked)

you should also try unchecking items not listed on the right side (antivirus programs can cause some slow down, but are recommended. Also you should leave a firewall, and possibly video card programs running {although these are often not required})
Also check your hard drive mode: should not be: PIO shold be something like: LBA ATA100 ultra dma mode 5
Also make sure your page file useage is around 20% (and that you have at least 512 mb ram.
